Brendan Palmer Comments……….
I have watched Mike Biddle, with determination and tenacity; take MBA Polymers from an idea twenty years ago to the current state of the art plastics recycling and reuse process. It is a great pleasure to watch a success story as it unfolds.
But, to matter how sophisticated we get in our ability to recycle and reuse plastics, there is always going to be plastics that cannot be recycled, currently this is about 76% of all plastics collected from either domestic recycling programs or commercial processes. The total amount of plastics collected in 2010 in the EU was 25 million tonnes , only 24% was reused in some way, the rest was either landfilled or incinerated (Plastics Europe: Plastics the facts 2011)
Processes like that employed by MBA Polymers will continue to improve the recovery and reuse numbers and this is a good thing. It is the unrecyclable plastics that DravTec is focusing on. We have developed a three stage (Advanced Conversion Technology) gasification system that can convert these remaining plastics into clean energy in the form of electricity and thermal energy for district heating systems.
Although we in DravTec are at the start of our journey, we will follow Mike’s example and, with determination and tenacity we will provide a clean energy solution for those plastics which can never be reused.
